After 6 years, 4 months and 17 days of house arrest, the Sandigan Bayan Special Court convicts former President Joseph Estrada of plunder. He is found guilty beyond reasonable doubt of receiving Jueteng Payola and kickbacks in the form of commission from the selling of Belle Corp shares. However, it is not yet final and executory. He can still appeal his case before the Supreme Court.
The nation, undoubtedly, is still divided about this issue but definitely, Heads of State will take notice of this unprecedented development, at least in Philippine history. However, until and unless the likes of former Under Secretary Jok-Jok Bolante, who is the principal accused in the multi-million Fertilizer Fund Scam, is brought to court for trial, Erap’s trial will prove nothing but a political zarzuela.
