Efren Penaflorida and the Dynamic Teen Company

Efren Peñaflorida is this year’s CNN hero. He has been reaching out to children who are out of school by taking the school to them. He and his Dynamic Teen Company volunteers push carts loaded with books, toys, and learning materials that children in the streets around the province of Cavite can use even for an informal study. They not only teach basic learning; they also build up values in them.

In his acceptance speech, he said: "Each person has a hidden hero within; you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need." CNN also quoted him as saying: "Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell my co-volunteers... you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be."

In the GMA News and Current Affairs Program, “Isang Tanong” (One Question), a special forum for the candidates vying for the presidency of the Philippines -wherein they answer one question from media personalities, students, and professors- Efren Peñaflorida is one of those who have had the privilege to ask one question. His question has been: “Paano ba maging bayani?” (How can one become a hero?)

Take a rubber boat, paddle toward a drowning person and save his life, and you will become a hero. Live for a good cause and die fighting for it and you will become a hero. However, heroes do not dream to become heroes. They never even plan to become one. They are just people who are willing to share a big portion of their lives to look after the welfare of other people with no strings attached. These are people who are willing to suffer so that others may have better lives.

The world needs heroes like Efren.
