Japan was struck by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast a few hours ago, creating a 30-foot tsunami that washed away cars, yachts, and tore away buildings along the coastal areas. Videos showed burning buildings after the massive impact caused by the huge wave. It has heavily damaged an oil refinery and a nuclear power plant leaving around 4 million homes without power supply.
According to a video footage by a Japanese TV network, a large ship swept away by the tsunami slammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture.
The U.S. Geological Survey issued a tsunami warning for the whole Pacific coast of Japan including, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami alert had been announced for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised Tsunami alert over the Pacific coast of the Philippine Island to level 2. The agency estimated the tsunami to impact the coastal region of northeastern Philippines with 3 feet tall waves.
