The Philippine President: One Year Gone By

This day marks the first year of President Benigno C. Aquino III in office. One year ago, the majority of the Filipinos have chosen him among several candidates to lead the country toward economic development and clean governance.

Perhaps, the people’s expectation about his performance is too great being a son of the late President Corazon C. Aquino.  Some sectors are expressing discontent with his leadership. I myself have seen some flaws. Right from the start, I have been dismayed about how he has handled affairs in Malacanang Palace. He has appointed three communication officials when one could be enough and the recent entry of Sec Mar Roxas into the cabinet seems all political accommodation.

In all fairness, I believe it is still too early to make any conclusion. The problems that press the country are too complicated to solve in such a short time. Natural disasters, oil price hike, high cost of living, limited resources, graft and corruption grip our country heavily. The different sectors of society should begin to look at things with a broader perspective. No government can bring about development without the support and cooperation of its citizens. We all need to give this government ample time to do its job. Besides, the president has a mandate of six years.

A citizen of any nation for that matter has a responsibility to support his government. However, support does not mean ignoring any misconduct. He needs to watch and be vigilant but always strive to become a responsible citizen.
