What Happens in a Nuclear “Melt Down”?

The aftermath of the Tsunami on the Fukushima Dai Ichi Nuclear Power Plants has caused alarm not only to Japanese people but also to nearby countries especially when the Japanese Government itself has admitted that the radioactive substance present in the air within the area has elevated four times from tolerable measurement. However, the term nuclear “melt down” is highly technical for ordinary people but like everyone; I would still like to understand it. I’ve read an article from the Journal.IE website, which has been posted by Susan Ryan. It is very informative and the site allows its readers to embed the article on their sites.
